Tobacco Passive Smoking Pollution

The burning of tobacco leaf in a cigarette causes the release of nicotine, carbon monoxide and tobacco tar into the air. Other chemicals which control the burning rate of a tobacco cigarette are also released. These harmful chemicals and deposits can be inhaled by non-smokers. Passive smoking is the term used to describe this form of air pollution.

You do not need to be a smoker to suffer tobacco cigarette smoking side effects. The World Health Organisation's International Agency for Research on Cancer reported that second hand smoke also known as passive smoking not only causes lung cancer but can increase the risk of developing lung cancer by as much as 30%.

Second hand tobacco smoke also increases the risk of coronary heart disease by 25-30% and has been linked to other serious medical disorders including the increased risk of a stroke.

The British Medical Association estimated that 1000 people die each year in the UK from the effects of passive smoking.

Children with illnesses brought on by exposure to passive smoking cost the NHS over £400 million in treatment. Second hand tobacco smoke also doubles the risk of cot deaths and the development of asthma. Further studies need to be made but it is speculated that children exposed to tobacco smoke have a greater risk of developing lung disease in adulthood.

The electronic cigarette or electric cigarette does not burn tobacco or emit tobacco based second hand smoke. Smokers now have the freedom to continue smoking and act more responsibly by preventing tobacco air pollution.

No smoker wants to see a loved one, friend or stranger harmed by exposure to their tobacco cigarette smoke.
