Fake Cigarette Reviews - Beware of Con Artists

A famous saying is, "don't believe all you read." This phrase is even more appropriate when it comes to internet promotion con tricks.

A company has recently been fined $300,000 for posting fake reviews online. The company had ordered employees to pose as satisfied customers by writing reviews for distribution online. The company also created its' own network of review sites to give the appearance of providing independent information.

This is the unfortunate case on the internet. Disreputable companies hire online users to post articles promoting the company or products. These ghost posters may have as many as 50 different accounts and use a combination of tactics to hide their true identity and online presence.

It is widely regarded that more than half of reviews posted on forums are made by paid internet posters.

Affiliate marketers often use similar promotional tactics - sometimes even blatantly lying in order to earn commission. Affiliates offer little if any support after the sale has been made. Affiliate marketers usually have no control over refunds or have any real product knowledge.

The electronic cigarette market also has its' share of paid internet reviewers just like any other online business.

Customers need to be aware of con artists and deal directly with main retailers. Here a few tips :

  • Buy directly from a branded retailer - The safest option is to make any purchase from the main supplier. Look for own brands to eliminate third party issues such as problems with refunds or support.

  • Visit review sites but keep an open mind - Not everything you read is true. Many reviews and posts on forums are written by paid promoters and are not genuine.

  • Beware of unprofessional sites - A sure sign a website is run from home. Text will change size and color frequently. Beware of promotional hype and bogus health claims.

  • Look for a business address - If no address is listed on the website, it will unlikely be run by a company.

  • Cheap prices and misleading information - Probably a scam or an affiliate seller who will say anything to make a sale. Beware.

How many customers do you think spend their time to register on a forum or review website, wait to confirm their e-mail address and post a proper structured 150 word review? Maybe 1 in 1000 customers?

The same is said of so-called reviewers posting negative reviews. Often this is a case of a comptetitor or affiliate attempting to push a particular range of products for their own gain.
