ASH and the Cancer Research Fund have accused tobacco manufacturers of adding addictive substances to increase dependence on cigarettes. It is also stated that there is insufficient regulation controlling substances added to tobacco in the UK and EU.

The anti-smoking groups also claim to have documentation showing evidence that:-

• Additives providing high levels of free nicotine to increase addiction to tobacco cigarettes
• The taste of tobacco smoke is enhanced by additives
• Menthol and Eugenol are added to disguise the irritant level caused by tobacco smoke in the throat and air passage
• Cocoa is used to allow tobacco smoke easier access to the lungs
• Substances added to disguise tobacco smells and the visibility of smoke

Dr Martin Jarvis states that no one knows outside of the tobacco industry which additives are used in which brands.

Current information shows that tobacco cigarettes may contain over 4000 chemicals and toxins which harm nearly every organ in the body.
