Children Smoking Cigarettes

Children who take up smoking are more likely to smoke when they become adults. Studies show that 1 in 5 children become regular tobacco cigarette smokers by the age of 15.

Trying just 1 tobacco cigarette as a child can lead to addiction. Around 90% of adults smoking today started smoking when they were children. Approximately 4,400 children take up tobacco cigarette smoking each day.

Parents need to watch for early signs take action quickly. Below is a list of warning signals that a child may have taken up smoking:-

• Asking for more spending money
• Frequent short trips from the house ie: going to the garage
• A sudden interest in walking the dog
• Excessive use of deodorant, aftershave or perfume
• A constant smell of air freshener in the bedroom
• Cigarette butts appearing in unusual places
• Bad breath or spitting
• Coughing more frequently especially in the morning
• Wearing a coat in warm weather
• Mood swings and irritability
• Chewing gum more often
• Fidgeting or jittery behavior
• Frequent smell of smoke on clothes or hair

It may be difficult to tell the difference between adolescent behavior and symptoms of a child taking up smoking.

Children with parents who smoke are 3 times more likely to start or try smoking. Parents who smoke may notice less cigarettes left in a packet which is a more positive sign a child has started smoking.

Children should never be exposed to any form of smoking. Cigarettes are intended only for adults. Exposing a child to cigarette smoke could be compared to showing them an 'Adults' only movie

The electronic cigarette is not a toy cigarette or in any way is intended for use by children. Parents should smoke sensibly and protect children from the dangers or cigarettes. Even smoking an electronic cigarette in the presence of a child may send out the wrong message.
