Shisha is not a suitable smoking alternative

Shisha smoking is more harmful than smoking tobacco cigarettes according to the Department of Health and the Tobacco Control. Using a pipe to smoke shisha and herbal tobacco can result in over a 5 times higher carbon monoxide level than a single tobacco cigarette.

Shisha bars are common place in the UK and once popular only with middle eastern customers, are now trendy hot spots for a mixed younger generation. Many shisha customers are unaware of the risks involved and continue to smoke pipes at shisha parties.

Dr Hilary Wareing, director of the Tobacco Control Collaborating Centre checked carbon monoxide levels in a shisha smoking sessions. She said, 'Carbon monoxide levels that were at the lowest four and five times higher than having a cigarette. But, the worst, shisha was 400 to 450 times more dangerous than having a cigarette."

The public needs to be aware that shisha smoking is a dangerous and unhealthy past time.

There are other alternative smoking devices available to leisure smokers. An electronic cigarette is a far safer way to enjoy the smoking habit and is on SALE now.
